Caregivers Education generally includes three components: Professional Development, Professional Practice, and Certification. Caregivers Education enables a caregiver to become certified as a licensed medical caregiver. It also involves the education and training of a caregiver to become a Certified Personal Caregiver or CPC. A CPC is capable of pursuing a wide variety of personal care responsibilities and is capable of working in direct patient care settings.

Caregivers Education involves professional development as well as specific training in specified areas, including: basic nutrition and good eating habits; infection prevention and knowledge of recommended preventative practices; disease management; and physical and mental health. These classes are generally held at community colleges or state colleges. After completing the coursework, the Caregivers Education student is required to pass a state exam, generally the CNA Test. Then he or she must complete a minimum of 200 hours of supervised clinical practice, which may be achieved through completion of a Caregivers Education Course at a local university. The majority of states require that Caregivers Education students pass an approved CNA Test.

The CNA Test consists of two parts. The first part is a written examination. Students must complete and pass the written portion before obtaining their license. Applicants must also successfully pass a skills-based interview prior to being considered for licensing. Caregivers who successfully pass this portion of the exam then must successfully complete a second part of the exam, known as the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Examination. A CNA is the most common of all Certified Caregivers. Many individuals work as a CNA in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Many individuals go on to become Registered Nurses, which requires further certification, and a CNA is the starting point for this process.

Caregivers play an important role in helping patients throughout their recovery process. They help with bathing, feeding, clothing, and toileting. Providing daily personal care can make the difference between someone thriving and staying in a nursing home. It takes dedication and time to ensure that every patient has a positive experience when receiving care.
