How to Look Your Best in Video Conference Calls

You may believe that video conferencing does not need the same degree of polish as an in-person interview or client encounter, but the visual effect is the same. According to a Wainhouse research report, 64% of us video conference regularly, and with telecommuting on the increase, a winning digital image has become a professional need.

Here are some pointers to make you seem and behave more professionally as you prepare for your close-up.

illuminate the path

Angles and lighting are just as critical in video conversations as they are in professional picture sessions. When you Skype with a coworker you’ve known for years, you may not be concerned about how you appear, but when you meet with an investor, new customer, media contact, or possible employee, the scenario is very different.

Avoid fluorescent lights as a general rule since they might generate unpleasant shadows. Avoid overhead lighting as well, since it may cause heavy under-eye shadows.

Position your principal light source behind the camera. In this manner, both the light and the camera are pointing in the same direction. You may also utilize two light sources behind the camera, one on each side, one on each side.

In terms of angle, the camera should be situated at eye level. Place something underneath your laptop to lift it till your eyes are at the same level as the camera lens.

Select a backdrop that is neutral

Make sure your background looks tidy and professional, whether you are at home or at a formal workplace. Less really is more. In other words, although you may like seeing all of your family photos on the wall, the person on the other end of the camera may find them disturbing. Clutter, clothing, heaps of boxes, and food and drinks are all examples of things that might make you seem unprofessional.

Take a selfie or a snapshot of what people view in your backdrop while sitting at your work. Remove any items from your desk or wall that may reflect poorly on your company’s image. Consider making one of your walls your corporate wall. Invest in the color and picture of that wall and keep it constant; even if your customers are aware that you are a one-person company, they don’t need to be reminded that you operate from home.

Keep your notes close at hand

If you need to refer to any notes during your conversation, write them down on paper and put them close to your camera. This will help you keep on track if you get anxious. Keep a notebook and pen nearby to take notes with as little visual interruption as possible.
